History of the building

First appearing on maps as ‘Sinsom Lodge’, this substantial country house has evolved through the centuries, serving as a home to a fascinating cast of characters.

Early owners included Captain Eyre Evans Crowe, who renamed it Sindlesham Lodge in the late 18th century. For a hundred years from 1810, it was the beloved home of the Harman family, who changed its name once more to Sindlesham House. In 1928, the estate was purchased by Lucy Graham Smith, a talented artist and prominent socialite whose sister was married to the Prime Minister, Lord Asquith.

The house played its part during World War II when it was requisitioned as a training school and hostel by Miles Aircraft. After the war, it found a new purpose as a training college for priests.

In 1967, the estate was purchased by its current owners, the Freemasons of Berkshire. Since then, it has been thoughtfully extended and modernised, including the addition of the impressive, vaulted Berkshire Suite. Today, we are proud to continue the building’s long history of hospitality, having transformed it into a premier venue for weddings, conferences, and events. We are committed to preserving the building’s unique heritage while providing modern, high-quality facilities for all our guests to enjoy.
